Background

SGME was engaged to prepare an annual compliance report to assess adherence to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The mine is an open cut thermal coal operation located in the Surat Basin in Queensland, between the towns of Dalby and Chinchilla approximately 250 kilometres west of Brisbane.

Objective

The mine required an ecological assessment as part of a major amendment application to expand and increase its operational life. An ecological assessment was needed to assess the potential environmental impacts that the expansion could have on ecosystems, habitats and species in the area.

Regulatory requirements demand comprehensive environmental impact assessments, including ecological surveys, to ensure compliance and obtain necessary approvals.

The challenge lies in identifying sensitive areas, species at risk and critical habitats to develop effective mitigation measures and environmental management plans.

Solution

SGME conducted an extensive ecological assessment and survey for a proposed expansion area, focusing on identifying crucial ecosystems, habitats, species and potential environmental impacts. Our methodology included desktop research using government and scientific databases, wildlife records and habitat models, complemented by on-site flora and fauna surveys using various techniques such as diurnal and nocturnal searches, trapping, camera traps and habitat assessments with specialised equipment over eight days.

The findings were compiled into a detailed ecological assessment report, and existing management plans were re-scoped to include the expansion area. A referral process was conducted to ensure the background environmental impact assessment was established, and the referral was subsequently sent through to the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI).

SGME adds value by offering comprehensive ecological services tailored to each project’s unique requirements. With extensive expertise and experience in ecological assessments, SGME ensures thorough evaluations are done and accurate recommendations are made. We provide innovative solutions to mitigate environmental impacts including creative offset strategies and advanced monitoring technologies.
