Background
SGME developed a comprehensive rehabilitation strategy and cost estimate for the quarry. We addressed erosion control, vegetation regeneration and safety measures while considering environmental compliance and sustainability goals. The quarry is situated approximately 60 kilometres west of Sydney, NewSouth Wales, near the Nepean River.
Objective
The quarry faced challenges in developing a cost-effective rehabilitation strategy that complied with regulatory requirements and addressed relevant environmental risks. SGME developed a conceptual plan for a stable, safe and environmentally friendly landform that retained and allowed regeneration of the endangered Swamp Oak Floodplain Forest community.
Solution
SGME conducted a thorough regulatory analyses and environmental risk assessments within comprehensive legal frameworks to identify potential risks and mitigating measures. Safety was prioritised throughout the process, ensuring that the post-rehabilitation landform would be stable and secure. Erosion and sediment control measures were implemented, contributing to effective environmental management. Special attention was given to preserving and regenerating the Swamp Oak Floodplain Forest community, with specific management zones identified for vegetation regeneration. Detailed cost estimates were provided which considered both rehabilitation actions and erosion control measures. The overall strategy aligned with regulatory standards and sustainability goals while. ensuring the safety of stakeholders, the well-being of the environment and satisfaction within the community.
SGME adds value to quarry rehabilitation through expertise in environmental engineering and sustainable land management. We conduct thorough site assessments to understand ecological needs and regulatory requirements. Our solutions include innovative cover design, landform design, erosion control measures and revegetation strategies that enhance biodiversity and minimise potential environmental impacts. We also bring expertise for ongoing monitoring and adaptive management plans to ensure long-term sustainability and compliance with regulatory standards, providing enduring value to quarry rehabilitation projects.
