Background
SGME was engaged to do a Regional Ecosystem (RE) validation survey to verify Government mapping as part of a proposed mine expansion. The mine is an open cut operation in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, 90 kilometres (km) south-west of Mackay
Objective
The mine needed RE validation to delineate the next stages of action for the expansion and identify vegetation in the proposed expansion area. This validation process was critical for making informed decisions regarding the expansion plan and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations including the need for management plans.
Solution
Initially, a desktop study was performed that enabled us to develop a survey plan. Once we had the survey plan developed, a field survey was conducted to validate the mapped REs, having regard for Government guidelines. The initial survey site selection was based on the desktop study, supplemented by additional sites identified during fieldwork. During this process, up to seven distinct REs were identified, prompting adjustments to the survey plan.
Data collection during fieldwork included vegetation types, and identifying weed species at secondary sites. Additional data were gathered along a designated route to confirm the RE boundaries. The culmination of these efforts resulted in a comprehensive report that collated the findings from the desktop study, field survey, and subsequent data analysis.
Engaging SGME for ecological site surveys delivers outcomes for informed decision-making and environmental stewardship. Our comprehensive approach starts with a baseline assessment, examining biodiversity, soil quality, and hydrology to identify rare or endangered species requiring conservation. Applying a comprehensive approach facilitate in-depth vegetation and fauna analysis, uncovering crucial insights into ecosystem health. Evaluating ecosystem services and sensitivities reveals hidden potentials and risks, guiding sustainable development. Our actionable recommendations steer impactful mitigation measures and sustainable practices.
