Background

SGME completed an investigation of rehabilitated areas and provided recommendations on landform design and soil / spoil improvement to increase vegetation establishment and growth. The mine includes open cut and underground longwall operations. It is located north of the Bowen Basin, approximately 190 kilometres west of Mackay.

Objective

The mine required guidance on amelioration techniques to improve vegetation establishment and growth. Additionally, guidance was sought on the potential for rehabilitation certification.

Solution

An initial sampling program was conducted by site personnel, followed by additional sampling by SGME. Both sets of samples were evaluated for fertility and erosion potential to aid in enhancing vegetation establishment. Selected samples were also evaluated for their suitability in constructing proposed landforms. The purpose of the sampling and analysis program was to assess the physical and chemical characteristics of various materials. These materials included existing reshaped and partially revegetated mine spoil, in-situ material like low-wall spoil and exposed natural ground requiring rehabilitation, and material intended for use in flood protection landforms.

SGME provided recommendations on landform design, rehabilitation repair and soil / spoil improvement to promote vegetation establishment and growth. A prefeasibility level cost estimate (+/- 30 %) for applying ameliorants / organics was also provided using an industry rehabilitation calculator.

At SGME, we’re dedicated to minimising the impacts of mining through habitat restoration and monitoring. We prioritise techniques such as revegetation to stabilise soil and protect biodiversity. Our approach includes advanced methods such as soil stabilisation and water management to enhance the resilience of restored habitats. Continuous monitoring is central to our success. By tracking habitat recovery progress and identifying potential challenges, we can make adjustments for an improved outcome.

Our strategy involves careful planning, tailored approaches for each mine, stakeholder engagement, adaptive management and a long-term commitment to ecological restoration. Clients can rely on us for thorough assessments, strategic planning, native species support, clear goals, effective monitoring, adaptive strategies and successful habitat restoration results.
